After breakfast, he rinsed their crockery in the sea while Ariana went to pick some more fruit for lunch. It wasn’t noon yet, but already the temperature was in the eighties. Her fair skin was beginning to freckle. His own chest was as dark as mahogany from the aborted fishing trip but she wasn’t used to the sun the way he was. He would have to make sure she stayed out of the afternoon sun.

It had been a while since he’d taken care of a woman. Oh, he’d had encounters, but an actual relationship was something he’d avoided for a while before he went to Iraq. After that, he’d been too busy with hospitals and surgeons poking at him.

He’d allowed things to get him down. It wasn’t the scars; hell, he had plenty of those, but during his time on sick leave he’d been forced to re-evaluate his life. He was thirty-seven next birthday, old enough to get some sense and quit racing around the world pulling people out of holes they’d dug for themselves.

But what to do afterwards? He had no clue. He’d tried working in mission support, being the eyes and ears of the guys on the ground, but being behind a desk made him itchy. He needed to be active and five mornings a week at the gym weren’t enough. He wanted something more, but he didn’t know yet what ‘more’ consisted of.

Maddox returned to the boat, whistling. He might not know what the future had in store for him, but he knew what was in store for a certain Celtic beauty this afternoon. Her little pirate fantasy was about to become reality.

He considered the leafy canopy beside the boat, a few stakes in the sand and some rope ought to do it and he had both. Maddox worked quickly and when he was done, he covered his handiwork with the quilt. That ought to do it; now for the pirate.

He went below decks and searched through his rucksack, smiling when he located a tin of camouflage paint he’d used on missions. Ms. McMahon was about to encounter a 21st century buccaneer. He pulled on a dark T-shirt and pants and pushed his feet into a pair of old sneakers. Arianna would return shortly and he wanted to intercept her before she reached the boat.

He left the camp and headed into the jungle, seeking his prey.

Arianna was singing softly to herself, carrying a bag she had fashioned from one of his shirts. Maddox circled around her silently until he was within feet of her. Pulling his knife from its sheath, he stepped into her path.

Her scream was music to his ears. “Maddox, you bastard!”

“Quiet, wench.” Knife in hand, he stalked toward her.

“But …”

“Quiet, I said.” He put a dangerous edge to his voice to silence her.

“Pretty little thing, aren’t you?” Arianna’s chest rose and fell and he didn’t bother to hide his interest in her trembling flesh. He grabbed a handful of her hair and his cock grew hard at the flush of excitement on her cheeks.
